Meta introduced ads in Status and Promoted Channels (plus paid channel subscriptions) in WhatsApp's Updates tab, which it says 1.5 billion people use daily, rolling out over several months. Ads appear only in the Updates tab; personal chats remain end-to-end encrypted and are not used for ads.
