How to advertise on websites

Banner, native and sponsored placements sold directly by publishers or bought programmatically through an exchange.

What this is

Web advertising is the biggest and oldest channel tracked here: display banners, native placements and sponsored content sold on a publisher's own pages. A publisher often sells it two ways at once — a sales team quoting a rate card or a negotiated deal, and the same inventory auctioned programmatically through an ad exchange the moment a page loads. A programmatic buy is priced per thousand impressions (CPM) and settles by auction; a direct deal is more often a flat rate, a rate card, or a negotiated sponsorship for a fixed placement or period.

Questions

Is web advertising always programmatic?

No. A publisher's ads.txt names the exchanges it auctions through, but the same site can sell a homepage takeover or a newsletter-style sponsorship directly, off a rate card or by negotiation — this directory tracks both.

What does a CPM actually buy?

A cost per thousand impressions — the standard unit for programmatic and many direct web placements alike. A $10 CPM on a page with 500,000 monthly views is a very different budget from the same CPM on a page with 5,000.

Can I buy without a minimum spend?

Some sellers state no minimum at all; others set a spend floor that can run into five figures. The directory records a stated minimum per seller where one is published — filter by budget in the directory rather than assuming a figure here.
